DJ Dave an UMNO member?

Hmmmm…. that’s interesting. I just read in todays paper (the Star) that DJ Dave is an UMNO member. That’s funny. I thought the ‘M’ in UMNO stands for “Malay” and not “Muslim.” As far as I am concerned DJ Dave became a Muslim many years ago just to marry a fellow celebrity. They got divorced but of course he was stuck good and proper - it would have been too much trouble to get out of the religion. And anyway, it was a passport to the local entertainment scene. It was his bread and butter after all.

But DJ Dave is Punjabi, I think. Well at least an Indian. So how does that qualify him to join UMNO? I mean, if a Chinese Muslim tried to join, would they accept him? He would be able to join MCA or Gerakan , DAP or PKR, but would UMNO accept a Chinese Muslim? It is after all the ‘United MALAY National Organisation.’ So how come DJ Dave got in?

Ah well! Anything is possible in Malaysia. After all a second generation Indonesian can become a Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) of a state, but a fourth generation Indian may hold a red Identity Card, or be told he has no rights to demand for social justice out of poverty - and get thrown into prison to boot.

No offense DJ Dave, I was just curious, that’s all. So - are you Malay?

  1. tikki Says:

Article 160 of the Federal Constitution defines a ‘Malay’ as a person who is a Muslim, habitually speaks the Malay language and practises the Malay custom. DJ Dave generally fulfils all three. At least in public, he seems totally immersed in Malay culture and speaks Malay etc. So, legally, he’s Malay.

Thanks for that clarification Tikky!! Appreciate it.
